okay, heres the deal. I am either going to buy roxio easy media creator 7 or nero 6 ultra because each offers the features i was looking for. however, when looking at dedicated software for copying dvd movies, many companies offered an integrated or downloadable decryptor so you can get past decryptions in major movies on dvds. both roxio and nero say they will copy dvd if they are not encrypted but i have found nothing that says they offer decryptors to get around this like a lot of dedicated software. So theoretically, if i rented the new movie "troy" and wanted to copy it, could i do it with nero and roxio? Any help would be much appreciated.

Try reading some of the articles on afterdawn.com! I personally favor Nero for burning DVD's.

Don't let anyone fool you, Digital Millennium Copyright Act allows everyone to have 1 backup copy ( but not the be sold, shared or given away as gift to anyone else) of any copyright protected media they personally own such as VHS tapes, DVD movies, Music CDs, etc.

I thought you guys might like to know that i appreciated your advice and it helped me out. Also, Jdeh, i didn't mean to stir up any mixed emotions by asking about a shady topic but it is kind of discouraging when your the first to post and you tell people not to awnser my question. next time leave it to the admins, it's not your problem.

Yes it is! It is not illegal to make a single backup of media that you have purchased! But copying rented media that you do not own is illegal.

Well he's right though! We do not offer advice on doing illegal things! If you said you wanted to make a backup of a DVD that you legally purchased and still own, rather than saying you want make a copy of " if i rented the new movie "troy" then the subject may have been approached a little differently.

Theoretically, he said. Turcoloco laid out the law for him, I didn't see the need to belabor the point and give him a hard time.

please read my post...i was referring to rental movie, not a movie that you own ... i very well know my right to make copies of things that i own ....

I think there has been a misunderstanding between parties and the debate keeps going on for no reason....

You were right, he did use 'a rental movie' in his example whether he meant it or made an incorrect reference, doesn't matter any more since I am sure he knows now what is legal and what is not.

If he still wants to make copies of rental media, no one here will help him whether we have the answer or not since it's not allowed by MG Forum policy. ;)
