    Hi

Where you running the beta 1 of .Net4 also? if so you'll need to uninstall it and also uninstall KB958488 if in add/remove and/or in view installed updates? to allow beta 2 to install.

beta versions of .Net dont tend to like previous versions and can at times be a pain to remove so if you have removal issues then use this HERE (it will remova all .Net versions so you will have to re-install the ones you need) its a last resort tool.

    Hi

What woukd be the reason for a beta .Net? just curious as they are not the best way to go for a stable PC.

Is your Windows 7 fully upto date, with all updates and hotfixes?

On installing have you disabled your AV and Firewall to test that are not blocking, are you in admin account?

What was the error on the KB958488 in full, open Windows Update and then choose View Update History then double click on the KB that failed and whats the Error Details Code listed?

Try installing the release version of .Net3.5 SP1 full download is at bottom of that page over the bootstrapper version.

    Error code 80080005

I tried .Net beta 2 because initially I tried 3.5 but when i try to stall the installion (double click the icon) it just doesnt do anything..

I just downloaded the full installation and started it. It unpacked the files, but then didn't give confirmation of a successfull install, actually i dont think it installed at all only unpacked files, then quits (not giving an error message). The .Net4 beta installation similarly fails after unpacking, gets stuck at 0%.

How long does the installation generally take? after 20 minutes without showing any progress I assume it died on me..

trying to shut down the computer it gets stuck..
turning back on after a long while I get the message:

    problems keep piling up..

When trying to shut computer down it just gets stuck on the 'shutting down' screen so i have to hold the off button to turn it off.
Strangely I found KB958488 in the installed updates list. It must have installed today when I tried installing the .net3.5 (how can I check if installation was successfull??)
Furthermore, I think the windows installer/uninstaller doesn't work. Trying to uninstall a program it does the preparation (install shield wizard) and then goes to nothing although the icon is still visible in the taskbar. To close uninstall I have to end the IDriver.exe process.

I'm thinking clean sweap and reinstall windows. But the laptop isn't even a month old. Bloody hp

Go to windows update and click on the view history in the left column. It shows all the updates with the date attempted to install and success or failure.

Yes I know I can see all the updates in there, as I said I saw KB958488 in the list. But how can I check for .net?? Or because it doesn't have .net in the list it means its not installed?

Did you view the history for your computer? After it gives the update of the install, there will be a green or red icon in the Status column. That shows you if it installed (green) or failed to install (red). For those who are colorblind, the green icon has a check/tick in it and the red icon has an x in it.
The update will say something like Microsoft .NET Framework 4 beta 1. KB958488 is installed along with .Net framework 4 beta 1 but it is not .NET framework. It needs to be uninstalled with .NET framework 4 beta 1.

FYI. .NET 3.5sp1 should already be on the Operating System.
