on the small (LAN) network we have at work of 1 server, 3 (constantly running) computers and 1 laptop and the possiblity of another 20(roughly) more machines able to connect to it 1 of the 3 computers suddenly has decided its not gonna play ball

when trying to sign in on the domain it say that thenet logon is not loaded on the machine so i to sign in as the machine administrator and look what services were running and the net logon wasnt running though it was set to automatic so should have loaded so i told it to start and it said that it was unable to load and for further info look at the event log. so i looked and all the details, which i will copy the screen on to here below, so on this machine i am unable to access the network or the internet and as im still reading though the networking books i havnt a clue what to do and as im ment to be learning about this i thought i should try sort it myself (with help from you lot ;) ) so any help would be great, thanks :D

have you restored system files as windows suggests? Seems like theres more missing than the dll - Maybe the whole Cryptographic service!

-> Have you t´ried to start the netlogon service manually once - after copying the dll? Maybe win will create the entrypoint after that!

i just put the .dll file back on and now it coming up with the other codes and asking me to put the windows 2000 cd in the drive but when i put the cd in the drive the pop up gos and the auto run kicks in so i rebooted and held down shift when i put the disk in the drive but the pop up went still so i just restarted leaving the disk in the drive and the pop up hasnt came this time but its not doing anything and im half tempted to just take the easy route and do a clean install :p but i gotta at least try and fix it so you havnt got any more ideas have you? :D

o and if i try to start the service myself it come up with the error still

as the article says that SP2 installs the 128bit encryption, I would rather try to reinstall Service Packs, than the whole OS!

sh** - well, let's try something else ...
    Don't know win2000 quite well! Is there a sfc.exe?

    start>run>sfc /scannow - follow instructions

Have you tried just putting the windows disk in and do a repair windows install

ok that sfc thing does summin in what looks like CMD but it only flashes up for half a second (not that i timed it lol) so if it does anything i havnt got a clue

    start>run>sfc /scannow

When you start sfc.exe without an option it stops immediately

in the run console ("windows key" + R) i typed sfc /scannow and all that happens is the run console dissapears and CMD flashes for a split second so im guessing that windows 2000 doesnt have this or it is different

in this case open up a command and start sfc and copy -> post what shows up!

Hopefully the sfc will solve your problem! If not ...

    Let us know!!!

That option requires the win2000 sp4 disk to run.

I unfortunate to have to work on this win2k machine everyday and comes with no options like my xp machine all services require the disk to be started sucks its not much for doing fun just work.

well that hasnt made the slightest difference so im gonna try the repair instalation idea now it cant make anything any worse lol :D

  29. rainmak3r

    rainmak3r Private E-2

did it copy the dll from installation cd? or didn't sfc do anything?

Of course, as soon as I decide to tackle this thread, you wipe lol. For future reference though, I believe 2k is just like NT4.0 when it comes to SPs and reinstalls. NEVER reinstall a 32bit OS on top of itself, you'll cause yourself more problems than it's worth. Always do a repair from the CD if possible. If you dont have a CD with the current SP, uninstall SPs prior to repair. If you EVER change ANY system files, or have to stick in the original CD for ANY reason, re-run ALL installed SPs.

Actually, with 2k I think it's only the last SP installed that needs to be re-run, my bad.

And yes, I've had to uninstall SPs using recovery console before, not fun.

wel some how trying to fix the windows 2000 installation messed up the windows xp pro instalation on the 2nd partition so wiping total and re-installing both O/S is easier lol
