netopia usb adaptor

i got a problem with my dads laptop not being able to enable a netopia ter gusb-n wireless adapter, now ive bin using this adapter with all of my computers and have had no problems what so ever and when i go to install the driver on his laptop (acer aspire 5551) it installs fine but when i go to plug in the adapter its recognized but wont enable for use ive tried everything like uninstalling and reinstalling with a fresh driver, ive tried power draining with the battery out, i tried restarting and all that stuff but i just dont know, i know he dropped the laptop a couple of times but testing other devices the usb ports still work

This may or may not be the solution; however I've seen it happen before with other brands of USB adapters including Netgear and Belkin:

The adapter should have both a model and version # on it (example: Model XYZ123, v2.1). Go to Netopia's support site and check the fine print on 64-bit compatibility for both the model and version you have.

An example of this is Netgear: In many models, the v.1 and v.2 adapters will not work with a 64-bit OS, only models that are v.3 or higher are 64-bit compatible.

If you end up having to buy a new one, here's my pick: I've sold over a dozen to customers over the past few months; it works with either 32 or 64 bit.
