Netscape 7.0 Mail/SMTP Problem

    The problem:

Configuration of SMTP server keeps adding more servers every now and then along with the default one. As a result sometimes the mail cannot be sent and at times even with 5-6 server setting added by Netscape itself. Since the problem is erratic it is very difficult to troubleshoot it.

Anyone have problems with additional SMTP servers added automatically by Netscape 7.0?

    The system configuration is:

    OS Windows 2000 with SP3
Netscape 7.02 (updated recently with same problem cropping up)
    Connection Dial-up 56k
    CPU Intel 1.6 Ghz
    Motherboard: Intel
    Ram 256 MB

The configuration is not of my machine but someone eles whose system I am trying to troubleshoot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At geeks I thought no question goes unanswered! I stand corrected.

On the other hand I also realise that Netscape is used by less than 5 percent of computer users so feedback is difficult to get.

I just hope someone comes up with some solution to this problem.

I didn't find anything of use on netscapes site (not surprising). Though that type of behavior doesn't sound proper. Do the added accounts have the same config as yours? or do they seem made up? It could be viral activity. Though I'm unsure of that. Have you scanned recently?

The accounts are exact copy except the word "default" in brackets is not there.

As for virus activity, I doubt that since the gentleman has the antivirus software installed which is regularly updated and system scanned from time to time.

I also came across a thread after I posted this message on the forum. On another website where one person reported exactly same problem as this one and someone responded by saying he also had experienced same problem the previous day. One thing was different, in the sense that they were using Win 98 instead of Win 2000. From that I could easily make out that it is not the problem of the operating system but has to do with Netscape only. Could it be a bug?

I also have the understanding ( I may be wrong though) that most of the people who go for the Netscape are basically interested in the browser and not the integrated mail system. Which means even fewer people would report a problem like this. Many do not even bother to trouble shoot but just move on to another browser and mail program if they encounter any problems.

We geeks are challenged when confronted with a problem and have an intense urge to find a solution. What is frustrating is that if an answer or solution is not found we feel we have failed.

How does one cope with that?

    EDIT: spelling mistakes

I know that I never use the integrated mail features of any browser. It's quite possible that it is a bug and if you report it as well as supplying a link to the other reports you found to Netscape in your report, then you will be doing your part in helping to fix the bug.

    Have you tried opera? www.opera.com

If it helps, why not? Here is the link (glad I remembered the subject of the thread) which I mentioned in my post earlier.

EDIT: At the moment I am testing out Mozilla browser. Will try the opera later as well, thanks for reminding me.

actually I was referring to sending NETSCAPE a report with the link so they could see the others having the same problem.

The information was actually sent by the user but he never received any response.

Just sent the link to this thread to Netscape via their feedback form, If I hear from them I will come back to this thread agian.
