I am trying to fix a friends pc. They could not open Excel or Word. I found running Tools:Error Checking found a multitude of bad sectors.

Then when running all the steps listed here I kept getting NETSCP.EXE errors. I then tried opening Netscape 7.2 to no avail. I loaded the new 8.1 which now works and this allowed me to run all the AdAware, etc.

I still cannot open Excel, and I see there are 47 processes running in the background which seems excessive.

I have attached the results from bitdefender, activescan, and highjackthis in hopes it will help someone lead me to what else is wrong.

When consulting with the wizards on this site in the past, I had seen links where you can plug in the HJT log and it will tell you what to do. Since the last time I was here, the site has changed and I dont see the links listed anymore.

if someone has the time to help I would greatly appreciate it. i have run all the software listed on the "before you post" page, and in safe mode.

The pc has XP OS and the user uses AOL. There are 5 users on this pc.

Thanks for any direction you can offer...

There are a few things in your HJT log to fix but they have nothing to do with your problems. Your problems are more than likely not malware related. Sounds like you have hardware issues if you found bad sectors.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
