This is a tough one so let me explain. We are dealing with three
computers that I will name 1, 2 and 3. They all have external hard
drives on USB. One and three can communicate with each other just fine
and with their external hard drives. with no problem.

Computer number two is the one I suspect is the problem. It can
communicate with 1 and 3 and their external hard drives. However one and
three can only communicate with the internal hard drives of computer 2
and not the external USB Drives.

When I try to communicate using one or three with the external drives on
computer number two here is the message I get:
\\Steve\t is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
    if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

All of my drives are shared and total access is given to everyone. To me
it appears that USB on Drive 2
is the problem. I reinstalled all the USB hubs on #2 and uninstalled and
reinstalled tcp/ip. This one is more than I can correct since I tried
everything that I can think of. Help!!
Everything in regard to the network has been working fine for a couple
    of years?

Lets start with the basics although it sounds as though you have it covered.

    What OS?

Make sure that they are all in the same Workgroup... Double check it. =)

Make sure that they all have a shared user name and password.

Make sure there is no firewall installed.

Verify file and print sharing is on.

Patches for windows - just cause.

can computer 2 (the one with the issue) can it see itself in the network neighborhood?

Lets start with the basics although it sounds as though you have it covered.

What OS? ------------One has WinXP Pro and 2&3 have W2k Pro.

They are all in the same Workgroup...

Make sure that they all have a shared user name and password. I don't use any share name and password.

Make sure there is no firewall installed. There is a firewall on each individual computer but to check I turn them off and that makes no difference.

Verify file and print sharing is on. Yes for all computers

Patches for windows - just cause. Most patches are up to date.

can computer 2 (the one with the issue) can it see itself in the network neighborhood? I don't think computer two is the issue I think it is a lack of 1 and 3 to see two, since two can access both 1 and 3. It is one and three that can't access 2's usb ext. hard drives. Hope this helps.

Okay, so let me get this straight. 3 computers, all with external USB hard drives that are fully shared, along with the internal drives are all fully shared.

    2 can see 1 and 3
    1 can see 3
    3 can see 1
    1 can not see 2
    3 can not see 2

I think its still a user name issue. Just for fun try this: Create a username test with the password test on all machines. Reboot each machine and log in with the username and password test and see what happens. Also just for fun, what happens if you take 2's USB hard drive and plug it into a USB port on 1, can 3 then see both drives?
