Hey, I had what I thought was a software problem, but it turns out it might be a hardware issue.

I have a computer that I just did a fresh install of XP on to a brand new hard drive that keeps crashing every time I try to open a browser.

Here's the funny thing: It will work and start surfing the internet if I boot into safemode with networking.

If I boot into normal mode with the ethernet cable unplugged, it will also open the browser and not crash. (But obviously can't connect to the internet with the cord unplugged.)

When I plug the ethernet cord in and THEN open a browser in normal mode it crashes.

I've disabled quick boot and am not getting and BSOD errors on restart. (Though there isn't an option in the BIOS for the MIS K9A2GM v3 mobo to disable auto restart on system stop)

Any ideas? I've been futzing with this for days now.

Look under the windows event log and look for any critical errors. What does it say? Post the text here please.

No error messages, despite the thing crashing several times in the past few minutes, just "information" markers Here are the ones that keep repeating:

    Application
    Type, Source, Event
    Information, ESENT, 302
    Information, ESENT, 301
    Information, ESENT, 300
    Information, ESENT, 102
    Information, ESENT, 101

    System
    Type, Source, Event
    Information, Service Control Manager, 7036
    Information, Service Control Manager, 7036

That rules out the NIC as the cause because if the hardware was faulty, it would crash in safe mode with the CAT plugged in.
Some driver loading in normal mode is conflicting with the NIC. How you discover which one is beyond my abilities. Maybe someone will weigh in with some options.
