I have a gateway p4 running xp home. I am trying to connect to my linksys router on my test bench and I cant. I ping my 127.0.0.1 and I get a signal but thats as far as it goes. I can't ping anything else. I checked my settings under the network card and compared them against this computer, and everything seems fine. I have run 5 or 6 computers from that connection and they have all been fine. I also changed out the network card but still no luck. any ideas?

Is a firewal blocking your access?
    What does "ipconfig /all" say?
Does th NIC show connected or disconnected in the systray

it flashes and is gone. No firewall, the nic is connected, but it recieves about 5 packets, but thats all.

Does ipconfig show an IP address or 0.0.0.0
Have you tried setting a static IP?

ipconfig dosn't show anything, it just has a black screen and shuts down. I havn't tried a static adress but I have other problems right now the system keeps shutting down I'm not sure why just yet.

Does it shut down to dead or shutdown and reboot?

Random reboots can frequently be caused by bad RAM or RAM that needs to have the contacts cleaned. I usually use a pink pencil eraser and gently clean the contacts on the module.

Sorry I wasn't more specific about ipconfig. You should go to: Start-> Run-> cmd and hit enter then type ipconfig. it should show your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway.

It hangs at random places. I noticed that when I didn't have the ethernet plugged in it didn't hang. I'm done for the night, I'll get back to it with a fresh head tomorrow.

It sounds like you may have a bad NIC or a messed up driver. It's having problems communicating with the router.

I replaced the nic, as I thought that was part of the problem myself. I went back to the original everything works again. Now I hit a lag often while navigating around the computer. I still can't get online, but I thought this was interesting. after 2 min of the computer being on I have 12,000 + bytes transmited. I think that is a bit excessive for not being able to id it self. Sometimes I have 200 bytes recieved. hopefully this will take you in the right direction.

This should help more my IP adress is 0.0.0.0 and subnet mask is 255.255.255.255

Your failing to get your IP address from the router. Thats why it's 0.0.0.0

Try setting it to static IP 192.168.1.110
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    Primary DNS 192.168.1.1
    Secondary DNS leave blank

Ok just got back from vacation, I dusted the system off and configured a static IP to no avail.
