Network "Connected", cannot access Internet

Hey guys. I've run into a problem after reformatting my computer. After reinstalling Windows, my inegrated network adapter (obviously) wasn't working.

Upon reinstalling my motherboard's drivers (including ethernet), I still wasn't getting a connection to the internet. I tried the Winsocket fixes, having windows manually install the drivers to the card, redoing the internet connection wizard, etc. The major problem with the common fix is that upon doing ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew, after I renew, it stays stuck on renew for a good minute, then says ERROR: cannot contact DHCP server.

I'm on a network router (Linksys) 5-port, with two other desktop computers, both running XP SP2, and they work perfectly fine.

When using ipconfig/all, it shows no default gateway and no DNS suffix. I have no idea if this is normal or not.

I'd be grateful for any sort of help, or any direction in fixing this.

did you have a software to go with your internet provider..

No. My ISP is Northland Cable (local company, I believe. Or at least very small).

I did a little more research and decided to post my Ipconfig (I'm on another computer, so I'm just rewriting what's on my other screen). I also repaired windows (I forgot to mention this is Service pack 2), reinstalled my network drivers multiple times, and uninstalled all antivirus/firewall software on my rig.

There's nothing in my Default gateways. I went to properties, TCP/IP, properties, advanced, and saw nothing in my IP address or Default Gateways

Your IP on a Linksys should be 192.168.x.x
and the Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0

I don't run XP so I can't tell you what to do to get the adapter and the router talking to each other.

As far as ipconfig /all not showing anything, since it requires talking to the router and you don't seem to be doing that, I suspect that is why you see nothing.

When you open device manager does your ethernet card appear normal?

Isn't that your graphics card? What is your ethernet card?

    Thanks for the reponse.

Device Manager shows the device is "Working properly" and enabled, however I don't quite know what to look for. I'm not very hardware savvy, so forgive my inexpertise :/.

nForce is what ABIT motherboards use from what i've seen. It's an integrated network adapter on my motherboard.

Still no luck. I even used a program (network magic) to try and detect my settings. It said my computer was not reading an internet connection, essentially. Tried both the router and directly to the modem.

Ahh NVIDIA. I had a computer with an NVIDIA motherboard (integrated ethernet adaptor). You likely have the issue I had (and if not, I have no idea then).

I'm assuming you have a Gigabyte motherboard (that's what I had) with the NVIDIA chipset. You have to uninstall the NVIDIA network security/firewall thing (I forget what it's called exactly, but it's part of the mb chipset driver package, and gets automatically installed).

Either that, or pick up an ethernet card (they're cheap... usually like $10) and install it in your machine, and use that instead of the integrated ethernet port. This is a well known NVIDIA chipset issue... google around, and you'll find more information on it if the information I provided isn't enough.

For what it's worth, I hope you get your issue fixed!

    Selkies Update:

I bought a new network card, but I still can't access the internet, but for a different reason this time.

I'm getting the whole "Limited or No connectivity" thing, and even though I winsock reset, it doesn't fix it. I still can't renew my IP address either. I've uninstalled my old onboard drivers to no avail.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice on the Nvidia motherboard. Prompted me to buy a new card :p

I'm trying to search "Linkys Community Forums" on Linkys.com's homepage right now to find some answers for you. What router version is it? Seems that this hardware thing comes in several variants.

It's an NH1005, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a router problem, as both of my other computers can access the internet just fine.

NH1005 is a hub not a router and that might be the heart of the problem. It does not use DHCP. It uses something called CSMA/CD.

I have only used a hub attached to a router, I have never used a hub in place of a router to try and give multiple computers internet access.
