Network Connectivity

    Hello everybody,
    Can any one informs me how the computer can detect the network type? Assume there are two stacks enabled IPv4 and IPv6, once we plug in the network cable in the slot how the computer detects the network type ? It should try both protocols? how the procedure is done? Please guide me to any documentation that describes these things
