network disaster

hi im having a big trouble here with the network i made a brand new 35 meters cable for my moms computer on the second floor and i when i try to ping the ip i get the message request timed out

i already cut the rj45 conectors and made it again and its the same

any sugestion its welcome

 

What do you have inbetween? Is it just 2 computers or is there a hub / switch inbetween too?
What I want to know is, are there any lights flashing on the hub/switch if there is one?

If you do not have a hub, and only the two pc's, are there any lights on the Network cards? Do the lights flash?

If you have no flashing lights ever, then yes, there must be either a problem with the cable, or the drivers of one of the cards.

If you have flashing lights, then it will be to do with the network setup. You will need to ensure that your two pcs are on the same workgroup name, and that they have different ip addresses, but yet similar. You could go to start, run and type "command" or "cmd". In there you could type "ipconfig /all" and give us the results of both pc's.

Get back to us with more info or the resolution pls. You can never give too much info for me.

To caveat that, if you are not using a hub or switch then that cable has to be a crossover and not a straight through, The pinout is different

ok i have a 10/100 switch, my mom computer is the one with the problem, i can ping the other computers in the net except that one, it blink whn i try to send packets but they fail to reach the other end


my main server its a red hat 8 machine with 256 and pentium 2 @ 400

 

Ok, but whats the OS on your mom's PC?
DO you have a domain running or workgroup?
Do you have a router?
Do you have DHCP being controlled on the network? DNS? WINS?

its runing windwos xp and i have a linux router with no dhcp i use static ips

 

Wow, strange...

Sounds like the cable may be iffy. Can you try using the 35M cable you have made to link any other machine, ie temporarily replace a cable that already works, just to see if the 35M cable functions the same as a std 2 meter one...

Also, does the 35M cable pass/run alongside any sort of power cables, or Florescent lights for example?

Hi, do you have a firewall running on your mom's computer? If so, do you have it set to let your computer through?

 

it doesnt have a firewall, security its managed bye the linux router, i already tested with other cable and it worked fine,it pass nearby a telephone line, ill borrow a calbe tester tonight to see if the cable has somthing wrong ill post the results

 

Actually you already found hte problem. Its the cable you made. If you test fine with another cable there is nothing left.

 

i had found the problem iits was a pwer calbe inside a wall i had to shield the cable with aluminun paper to get it work
