Network hard drive on the cheap?

My USB external hard drive enclosure just took a dive onto the floor and died. The drive is OK, I think, thankfully.

I'd like to replace it with a network drive. I have a laptop and a wireless router so if I can plug it straight into the router I'll not run the risk of having it in a precarious place again.

Cash is a bit of an issue for me for the next couple of months so I need to find a budget solution for this.

As see it I have 3 options.

Spend the $25 bucks for a replacement USB enclosure.
-Is here a device that will allow a USB enclosure to be converted into a network enclosure?

    Spend $55 on a network enclosure. ($34+$20shipping)

Buy a second hand cheap PC and deal with it sitting in the corner of the room. I'd have the advantage of running it as an apache server but the size and fan noise would be an issue for the wife.

Can you see an option I'm missing here or is $55 the best deal I'll get?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
