    Hi

I have a network of 5 pc's running XP, Vista and windows 7. On the windows XP machine there is a shared folder where documents are scanned to. The problem is that although the folder is shared and documents in the folder are visible from the other machines when ever new documents are added they are not accessible by the other pc on the network until you you go on to the shared folder on the XP pc unclick share and then re select it.

any new item added to the folder says access is denied until this is done. I can not understand what is wrong, or what i have not done?

    it is running XP home.

    any assistance greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You need to make sure that this is a "Public" folder on the work group, and on the same work group as the other machines. Then you should be able to just map that folder to the other computers.

But your best bet, would be to use a NAS drive vs. a computer all of the time to share off of, due to that computer firewall software or anti-virus software, and vice-versa can tend to block access at times.

From one of the other machines, do they see the file but can not access it? How are the permissions on the share set up? What are the permissions on the directory?

Are you saying that the XP machine can not add anything to this shared directory that resides on it?

    Thanks for your reply.

If I set up file sharing on the folder on the XP PC with permission set to allow network user to change files all the files are accessible from the other PC’s. If however new files are added to this shared folder they are only accessible from the XP machine. I get a message that the file is locked for exclusive use by another user. :confused

Look at the info at ezlan.net. And again, have you tried using a Public folder to dump these files into and then try to access? Are you using any type of firewall software or anti-virus/anti-malware software liked I asked before?

Ahhhhh "locked for exclusive use by another user".

Making a little sense. When you break the share the object that was using the share, making it busy, gets disconnected and when you re-establish the share you wipe the slate clean, so to speak. Something is holding that directory/share busy. I'm kinda surprised that when you disconnect the share that you don't get a warning that x number of uesers are connected.

Download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896655.aspx and run from command prompt on the XP machine.

Enter "handle C:\<directory where the share is>". It will show you all the files that are busy/locked and what is holding them busy/locked.

    Give that a try.
