Have a laptop that is required at school for the kids.
They are required to be configured as part of the school
domain to access the resoures there.
Here at home we have our own workgroup in which we share
    our own resources.
What options do we have to be able to use both.

You need to create a separate hardware profile for each
network. Set up the appropriate harware profiles with the
necessary network information and then select which
profile to use when you boot up the machine.

    My reply;
with workgroups alone this does not work.
kids have to take the laptop to the school IT dept if i
lose the login there. so what i tried first which makes
    me hesitant to try anything else was;
on my laptop which only is member of our home workgroup.
i copied the only profile (named undocked profile) and
    named it (home).
then i restarted the computer and went in with the new
profile. i changed the network id and workgroup name to
    (george).
restarted the computer and went in with the original
    hardware profile (undocked profile).
checked to see that my original name and workgroup were
there and they were not. this profile is now using the
    new naming.

you can either be a workgroup machine or a domain
    machine . not both.

You can still access resources (in most cases)
    irrespective of the you chose
    either method.

For example, when I bring my work laptop home (which is
    corporate domain
bound) I can still access my home network by doing the
    following

1 - make sure I have one user ID which is the same as
    that of the work
    domain account
    or
2 - always connect to resources at home with a net use *
    \\someresource\blah
    /user:<homemachine>\<homeuser>

Browsing may have it's own sets of problems as the shell
    is kind of using
the misbehaviors of the Browser service.

    My reply;
    >1 - make sure I have one user ID which is the same as

SO WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE. CAN YOU CLARIFY USER ID? WHEN
XP STARTS IT AUTOMATICALLY STARTS IN ADMINISTRATOR
PROFILE. WHEN YOU LOOK UNDER USER ACCOUNTS THERE ARE ONLY
    2 THERE ADMINISTRATOR AND GUEST.
ON NETWORK ID THERE IS KIDNAME@SCHOOLDOMAIN.EDU AND THE
    DOMAIN NAME IS SCHOOLDOMAIN.EDU

    >2 - always connect to resources at home with a net use *
    \\someresource\blah/user:<homemachine>\<homeuser>

SPECIFICALLY WE NEED TO SHARE PRINTER AND SHARED FILES
ACCESS. IF SAY FOR A PRINTER THAT WAS NAMED HP ON A
COMPUTER CALLED DAD IN A WORKGROUP NAMED FAMILY. HOW AND
    WHAT WOULD YOU
    TRANSLATE "\\someresource\blah/user:<homemachine>\<homeuse
    r>" AS?

    >Browsing may have it's own sets of problems as the shell

BROWSING DOES NOT SEEM TO BE AN ISSUE.
