    Hi

My flat mateand I share a Pipex broadband internet conection that we connect to wirelessly through a Belkin router/modem. All has been running brilliant until yesterday when my flat mate was downloading from the net and his laptopfroze. He tried to reboot via the Ctrl+Alt+Del but couldn't so he held the power button to turn it off. Every since then he cannot connect via his inbuilt wireless card.

I have attached the laptop in question to the router/modemand it connects to the net fine.I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the wireless card's drivers but to no avail. The settings are still there for the wireless network but it cannot connect or even seem to find an available network when in network connections.

I tried to run Internet Explorer which directed me to a troubleshooting wizard that told me there was a WinSock error. Windows tried to repair it but according to the log it couldn't do so.

Any particular direction you think I should be looking to? Machine in question is running standard XP with SP2 and all the upto date updates as it auto updates all the time. Neither of us are particulary computer literate but I know a little.

    Any pointers are much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Matt

    Hi Matt

Are you sure he hasn't inadvertently disabled the wireless connection?

My son has a laptop and he tried turning it off in the dark by hitting various keys and lost connection for about a week to our network. It turns out that by hitting "Function" and "F2" he inadvertently turned off the wireless connection.

There was nothing to show this but after trawling the internet for hours I found that by doing the same it came back on.

    Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply! We tried Fn +F1 etc and still nothing. I ran a diagnostic check and it came back with something called a Winsock error??

Anyway, I was going to reinstall the drivers for the network card incase that was the problem but by the time I finished work he had reset his laptop to factory defaults and all was good in the world again.

Once again, thanks for the reply!

May be this can Help (read carefully every thing it eventually gets to the Winsock).

In General, you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet
