    Hey guys,

We've been runnning a network for over a year now. All of a sudden it just stopped working. . . HEre's our setup.

We have 2 identical computers, one cable modem, and a linksys router.

The cable modem is connected to the router, and then each computer is in one of the 4 ports on the router.

Then to setup the network, we click Create a Home network. We tell it that my dads computer connects directly to the internet. Then we run it on mine, and say my computer connects to the internet through my dads (another computer on the network.

It then gives us each a bridge, and we both have internet access. Though we are UNABLE to share files or printers any more.

Can anyone help me out? We have turned the windows firewall on the LAN connection on my dads computer off.

Did I pick the right options for setting up a network? Have one computer be the "master" and have on computer connect through it, even though they are both going through the router?

WEll, at least this is how we USED to have it, and it USED to work. But now . . it's dead.

    Thank you.

connect all computers DIRECTLY to the router...

using patch (aka straight-through) cable from each computer to the router

configure the "internet protocol" to get ip address from DHCP and also DNS from DHCP and use the connection wizard and tell each computer to connect through a residential gateway

from now on, you should be able to access the internet from any computer connected to the router and you should be able to share file...

    hope that helps

Hey, thanks man. That DID work. While I was at it, I set up 2 static LAN IPs for the computers.

The only problem I have now, is I can't access the main router page, to configure the fowarding of ports or what not. You know the default site "192.168.1.1" . . . It just says done but the last webpage I was on is still on the screen . . . nothing happens . . . Any ideas?

By the way, if I go to Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig . . it says that I do NOT have DHCP enabled . . . But I cannot access the router page to "enable" it anymore :(.

Is this because I set up the static LAN IPs?

    Thanks!

I take that back. I can access the router site now, but I still have the problem. We still can't connect to each other. It tells me I may not have access. I see the folders, but it says I don't have access . . . But yet my dad CAN get into my machine - I can't get into his . . .

I just noticed something on the error message . . . This is EXACTLY how it reads:

"\\DAD\Downloads is not asscessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. Conact the network administrator to find out if you have access permision.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

Not enough server storage . . .? I never seen that before . . . and there is practically 2 folders being shared, no more than 100mb . . . We used to share a helluva lot more before all of this happened . . .We used to share at least over a gig . . .

This is only the error I GET when trying to access my dads . . . he gets in mine fine.

do you have windows xp sp2???

if so, try adding file and print sharing to the exception list in the firewall configuration....

or if you are using advanced file sharing under windows xp make sure you create a username in your dad's computer with a password that is the same as you use on your current computer and make sure you DO have permission to access ;)
