    Greetings guys

Please enlighten me here...I am a part of small IT company and I need to know if there's a good program I can get to control file access on the network.

Here is my scenario : 5 users on a network with their own workstations, IT Technicians, Sales and Marketing, Admin, HR and Manager...All these users need to access different files on the network so here is what I want, I need for the IT guy to log on into his PC and only see files that he needs on his account and the same thing should apply for other users on their accounts..They should only see files and folders that are relevant to them.

Which program can I get to ensure I achieve this?

There is no program to control file access. What you need is to use Group Policy, and run everyone in a domain, whether it is building the domain server with Linux and learning how to use Samba, etc, or purchase Windows Small Business Server. Everyone will have to be running either XP pro, Vista Pro, or Windows 7 Pro on their machines. As for control on the LAN, you can also incorporate a build like pfSense, or purchase the proper equipment with smartswitches, etc. And yes, you can be looking at investing $10,000.00 or more in LAN and desktop/workstation, printer infrastructure if you do it right.

What type of system are the shares setup on?

Generally you create an account for each user, then set up a group, add the users, give the group permissions and add the group to the share. So the HR group has Hr people who can access HR files, etc, all this happens in a domain server enviroment.

You can get lazy or if your doing a small scale just add users and give them access to the shares, skipping the group part.

Then map the shares for the users in a logon script, or a autorun batch file in the users' startup - ie: net use drive letter: \\server\share

The setup / impementation depends on what OSes your using.
