I have a nice little home network i've set up (currently just between my laptop and desktop). I'm trying to get it so that if I share something on one computer, you have to put in a user name and password to access it from the other computer. I have switched the "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" from guest only to classic. I have also shared a few folders on each computer and set permissions so that only one account can access them. The problem comes in when i try to access the folders. Instead of a window coming up and asking for the username and password, it just says the share is inaccessible. I can change the permissions and allow everyone and it works fine, but i don't want to allow everyone, I want to have to put in the username and password. I have done this before i just can't figure out how. Please post any advice

Both systems are running WinXP Pro (SP2)
    All firewalls are turned off

Back in the older windows you could set a password on a share (the 9x stream). In the NT line shares are controlled by accounts. Which basicly means you simply add the accounts you want to have access to the share in the spot where you add everyone.

Of course to add such an account you also have to have that user on the computer.

Also in the event you have a user named bob on the first computer and on the second computer you deny bob access to the share but you let bill have access, when bob tries to access the share, by default he will not recieve a login window, since it tries to access it as bob and fails, so it assumes he shouldn't access it and won't even provide a window to login using a diffrent username and pass.

Also windows will only allow you to login under one name that isn't your own for network shares. Once you've logged in once it will never ask you for login information again even if the account does not have access. The only way to connect to two diffrent shares with two diffrent names is to map the drives. Windows XP will not allow you to enter two diffrent username and passwords any other way.

That's probly it! I have the same usernames on the two computers (Fraunzonk and Lan). Fraunzonk is my username and Lan is the account I use to share things with. I get it now. Unfortunately, I'm too tired at the moment to mess with it. I'll try it in the morning (later morning). Ok, thanx for the help. I'll update ya when I mess with it.
