Network speed

We have a file server on our network and I would like to know if files would save faster if the network was faster, or a faster hard drive would make it faster. Is there an easy way to measure this? Or is it a known if we have a 10/100 NICs what type hard drive would be fastest?

I'm going to purchase a file server and would like to know what type of drives would be best. Is the network going to set a limit on speed anyway unless we upgrade the network. We don't have much of a speed problem now with 10 workstations on P2P. Going to a Domain should help some I have heard.

I just downloaded Diskbench to measure hard drive speed. Would that tell me how fast a file saves over the network compared to saved on the local client? Thought I would give it a try.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

15,000 rpm scsi harddrives are the fastest, with a seek time of only 3.5 mpbs

But is a 10/100 mbps network going to be as fast as the drive? Althought I guess if there are 10 people using it, then there might be a few saving to the drive at the same time, and you would want the drive fast.

I don't want to buy more speed than I need. Is there any way to measure the speed of the network to a hard drive? I see that Diskbench isn't meant for measuring the speed of a disk across a network. I thought that might work. I'm not sure that drive speed is an issue now for us.

    Thanks,

    Jim
