    Hi,

Im hoping someone can help. I setup a home network and it was working fine. Then I wake up in the morning and its not working and I havent been able to get it working since.

    Basically I have a DSL-300T ADSL modem and a 5 port DES-1005d switch. Both are D-Link.

I have one cable (straight) going from my pc into the hub.
One from the modem into the hub and then my parents pc is also going into the hub.

Like I said, it was working perfectly. My parents could browse the net and I didnt change anything so I have no idea why it stopped working. I plugged the network cable into every port and tried with every combination. Last time, as I plugged the cable in to the hub it picked up the network straight away. It doesnt

Do you think it could be the cable? Maybe my switch isnt switching anymore?? I dont have another cable or hub to test with tho...

    Many thanks

you're going to need a router that will provide your computers with your IP addresses. Your switch dosnt have DHCP which is what will provide your networked computers with the IP addresses. that should fix your problem.

you could troubleshoot this by opening up a command prompt and typing ipconfig. this will bring up your network address configuration. if youre getting an internal IP address, by default you should be getting an IP address of 192.168.1.x. or something along those lines. maybe 192.168.0.x. whatever. if youre not getting an address like this and are getting a 169.254 number, youre not getting an ip you can use. The 169.254 number is the APIPA default IP address used by Windows.

His switch doesn't need dhcp, the router/modem can do it. First try reseting your modem, then rebooting all computers.

Oh right on. didnt know that dsl modem would give the comps on his switch ips. i knew it would give a public ip to a comp if was directly connected, but give out more ips than that...no clue.

thanks for correcting my posts by the way. correct info is good.

Some dsl modems are called modems, but are ineffect both modems and routers, assuming its worked before, then thats apperently the case this time. Do check your ip though using ipconfig and post the results and we can go from there MeNeZ.

Thanks for the great support guys but its still not working.

I took my hub back and got a replacement one and its stilll doing the same thing.

I have narrowed down the problem to one area though! I have found that when I plug my PC directly into the hub I DONT get any link status.
The other computer gets status right away. So I tried that network cable and it also doesnt work.
Everything works fine when my modem is connected to my pc but I cant connect to the hub. Just no status when MY pc tries to connect to the hub.

I have recently had problems with my raid controllers. Nvidia has taken over everything and I think it may be interfering with things as it now has its hand in the drive controllers, audio, firewall and networking...

I have (different)static IPs on both pcs, gateway is the router, same subnet and even workgroup.

you say you have static IPs in. did you turn off dhcp on your router? could be causing problems.

But the thing is, when I try connect my pc to the hub (No modem/router involved) it doesnt get link status...

But my other PC gets status right away.
