Im trying to decide on what brand/manf of hardware to go with for swithes/routers/VPN's etc. I havent had alot of experince with most but I personally use D-link and have grown acustom to them. I dont care for Linksys much. Im not wanting or needing high end equipment. Mostly off the shelf stuff but with some quality and reliability for small buisness or workgroups. Any suggestions or is it really just a personal preference any more?

Well first of all my question is how many computers in this Small Business or workgroup are you planning on having?

That will make a difference in what parts you should order.

If just a few like 7-8 I would recommend the Netgear FVS318 or FVG318. The FVS318 on has a 10Mb WAN Port. However the FVG318 has a 100Mb WAN Port and is also a Wireless Router with VPN Support. Both are 8-Port Routers.

I will be able to let you know in a week or two how good it the FVG318actually is because I just ordered it for a Small Business.

Its about 19 computers in a workgroup enviroment. Yes i know its alot but they refuse to go with a domain right now. I have a good idea on what functionality I want just looking for a decent all around manf for now.

If no need for wireless just get at minimum a 24 Port Router. If you do want Wireless however, I would just get like a 4 Port D-Link Wireless G Router and maybe an Access Point to in order to give the whole building an Excellent Signal.

Probably Cisco because they have a Lifetime Warranty. Therefore if the Router does fail in any way you will automatically get a replacement for no extra cost. They are fairly expensive though but come with alot of features for blocking hackers.

At the school I attend we have all Cisco Switches and never have any isssues with hackers.

Thanks I'll check it out. But im leaning more toward d-link, netgear, belkin etc for the reason you stated, cost! Besides i havent seen to many cisco products (other than linksys) on the shelf and the more popular stores.
