i have 2 laptops connected to a router which helps us connect to the internet. now here's a question. how can i transfer files between the two lappies?

I have tried putting them on the same workgroup but i cant see each other.
what should i do? do i need to set up a network?

One is running XP pro the other is running xp home chinese edition

Q2 how can i cange my router settings?

    ty in advance.

I'm assuming you can connect to the internet?
Any firewalls running? If so, disable them first on both laps then check if you can see lap1 on lap2 and lap2 on lap1. If it works, then all you have is a firewall issue and we'll have to work on resolving that so you aren't left unprotected.
Also, try pinging each computer from the other while firewalled and not firewalled. Sometimes they don't show up in the list but they are actually linked.

couple things you can try. First step was to put them in the same work group which you have already done. Next, make sure you have at least one folder shared out on each computer! Make sure simple file sharing is turned off on the XP Pro machine (not a function in Home edition). Then go through 'My Network' Places and then 'View Workgroup Computers' . If you still cannot see the other computer turn off the windows firewalls if you have SP2 installed. Also try pinging the other computers by IP and then by computer name. If you can ping the other computers but not see them in Network Places then try typing the path into windows explorer like this ' \\computername\sharename ' if that works then you can map the path as a drive. Honestly, I have had nothing but problems networking Home edition the way I want to and have upgraded everyone I have come across.
Another trick is to create a common username and Password on both machines.\
    good luck

ok so i can see both the computers of workgroup. but now i cant connect to the other computer.

P.S. only on one occasion did it pop up a window with user: guest\{computer name} (which could not be edited)

    password: (blank)

    error msg says:

OK, getting closer. Turn OFF the guest account on both!!!!!! Next, you have to have a password on the account you normally log into. Even if it's just a one user machine. XP likes/needs to authenticate. If you try and log on to a workgrouped computer that does not have a passworded account you will see an error as described. Again, by asking a machine to share resources is like sitting infront of it logging on, except through a network you HAVE to authenticate with a password.
If you still get that error try the windows explorer trick I mentioned before \\computername\sharename and let us know

one last thing.... Please dont forget to share at least on folder on each machine or you will get an error also.

ty cat5e. the site was useful but still stuck.

ty dedub. so i have the same username and passwd for both computers. (xp user logon) I have turned the guest account off on both.

    Here's what happens:

eveytime i try to connect from pro to home i get a user logon screen

    Username: guest\computer name

    password: (blank)

I cannot edit the user name. so i cant change guest.

    ----

everytime i try to connect from home to pro i get the previous error msg.

\\(computer name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

    thanks for ur help.

simply if any one has sucessfully networked xp home and pro and can trf files 2 ways. help out. Thank you.

Jackt, sorry for all your trouble. You know I did have the exact same problem when networking Home and Pro. Until I upgraded the Home Ed. what I had to do was the \\computername\sharename. Make sure you type the share name or you will get that error. What also worked for me was to go to 'Tools-Map Network Drive...' in windows explorer, type the path in and click the 'different user name' link and type the username and password for the other computer. You could also replace the computername with the actual IP. If that does not work Ill show you how to do it in a CMD prompt. Sometimes it works better outside of the Windows GUI

    good luck and keep pluggin'

U are already doing a lot to help dedub. THX.

So i tried using the explorer (\\computername\sharename) i get the user logon screen but i cannot change guest into the user name.

I tried mapping the home computer but i cant because it only shows the workgroup when i try to map it not the computer. (in the mapping fall down menu)

Definately i windows GuI is not working for me.

how can i do it on dos? or cmd in this case?

    @echo off
REM Drive Mapping Batch File created 27 Nov 05 by DWS

    REM ---------------Deletes current mapped drives-------------------
    net use z: /d
    REM ---------------Maps shared drives--------------------------

    Echo Mounting Operations Drive (Z:)

    net use z: \\computername\sharename /PERSISTENT:YES /USER:username password

Copy the above text into notpad and save it as 'map.bat' or what ever you want as long as it ends in .bat, replace computername, sharename, username and password to what they should be and run it by double clicking it. If you do not want to make it a bat file then type the LAST line in a cmd prompt.

and that smiley is actualy a colon with a bracket, couldn't figure out how to get rid of it

ty dedub. Unfortunately this did not work as well. it says user name/password are not correct, even though i am typing in the correct username/passwd.

Gosh Jackt, Im out of options. Unless I get infront of it I dont know what else to try. Well, except canning Home and going with Pro, that will fix your problem.
If you ever get it up with XP Home shoot me an email with an explanation on how you did it.

will do. i think i am typing the sharename wrong. u by anychance know how to check share name on xp home?

the share name is the folder-exactly!!! Unless you manually change it. It will be spelled the same. Non case sensitive Go to the folder your sharing, right click and select 'Sharing and Security' and check it out

Also, try this in 'My computer' address bar \\192.168.x.x\foldername

or this in a cmd prompt, make sure you have all the spaces correct, just like below

    net use z: \\IPaddress\foldername /PERSISTENT:YES /USER:username password

both are on the computer looking for access obviously.
