And just one other thing that has been plaguing me. Which might serve others. desktop Win10 - laptop Win10.
    using Netgear router, wifi.

I've tried everything my little experience can think of. I've don't what I've seen suggested on various boards, but still the lap top will not allow the desktop (nor the tablet for that matter) in to share anything.

It tells me I need a password. I've tried the usual steps to get the laptop to show me the password, still doesn't. I suspect that is still part of the refurbish wipe.

    Thoughts? video?

    Thanks.

Do you log on the laptop with a password? Did it have a password and you have it booting to desktop?

What versions of Windows 10 are on the computer and the laptop?

If it is a newer version then nearby sharing must be turned on
    1. Open Settings and click System.
    2. Select Shared experiences.
    3. Scroll down and find Nearby sharing. Toggle the switch to On.
    4. Set the dropdown below it to Everyone nearby.

Once that is done, you have to select a folder or possibly create a new folder and place into it all the items you want to share.

Thanks, no I don't use passwords, only me here. So I don't bother with it.

Done so much can't remember if I've done these steps as well. Will run them and see what I get.

We have next to no information here on your network settings so we have to assume for the moment that most settings are ok. Can you check the Properties of any of the shares you have created on the laptop and confirm that Everyone is showing on the Security tab? Also confirm that Password Protected Sharing has been turned off in All Networks under Sharing Options.

As you are using WiFi you won't need Nearby Sharing for any of this. It won't make any difference whether on or off.

Win 10 Home is the edition but we need to know what version.

Things change in different versions. Things that used to work no longer do and other "features" are added.
I need to know so the instructions I point you to are valid for what is running on each computer.

I don't use the newer fancy sharing, but in the old days you had to have a password. So make a password on your PC that is sharing files. Write this password down somewhere. Then go to start and run, type control userpasswords2 and once there uncheck users must enter a password. This will keep the PC booting without a password prompt. Now from another PC bring up the run dialog and type \\pcname and enter. Where PC name is the name of the PC with the shares you just set the password on. You should get a box for the user name and password, type in the user name used on the PC with the shares and the password you created, then you should see the shares.
