I have had this problem where i log onto my isp, but cant receive anything. It seems that my internet explorer doesnt want to try to get a connection. I thought it was due to all the netoworking adapters and protocols, so i deleted those and added new ones. The problem still exists.

    Help

    More questions

    What os are you using
also what kind of connection dial-up, dsl, or cable

if you are logging on then try using the command line to
    ping known websites
if you can ping from the command prompt then the problem lies with internet explorer. try other programs that connect to the internet to see if they are able to connect. for instance your email program.

If you have a firewall check the settings you might be blocking internet explorer from connecting.

also if you have windows xp you might have the firewall that came with windows xp activated. I recall when I first got a cable connection that was one of the requirements for the connection to be made to the isp. the xp firewall had to be disabled.

Conflicts might arise from having two firewalls active.

if it's not the firewall, sounds like it could be a Winsock error. If you get an IP Address from your ISP, but can't get anywhere on the web.... open a command window, and try to ping an IP Address. doesn't matter where, as long as it's past your ISP. If you successfully ping that, try again to ping a url (like www.yahoo.com). Let us know what happens there.

    im hating this alot

Well guys everyone is telling me two things one is to get xp pro, and the other is to leave dial-up behind. In any event i went on microsofts knowledge base and found certain dll files to be corrupted, so i replaced them in win 98se, turns out it still wont work. As far as checkin by pinging i get multiple errors, each day its a new error. SO when i am pinging it gives me these two errors
    1. "unknown Host";
"Unable to initialize windows sockets interface, error code 6"
2.when I run winipcfg i also have gotten these two errors
    A."failed to initailize winsock"
    B. "Fatal Error cannot read ip configaration"

The B one has support on microsoft, and i did that, but it lead to the error posted in A.

Dont know whats going on, I did order xp pro, being that it will be cheaper having a student discount, but will take 15 days to arrive.

Pls be patient with my response cus, as you can see im handicapped without the dam internet, I will check regulary, and if any solutions work i will post them
    Thanks

    reinstall

You should reinstall the operating system it seems that crucial files that you need are missing reinstalling the operation system cures a lot of this problems. I use it as a last resort. Many times it has fixed the problem.

ok, it's a winsock error... here's a fix for it. Involves going into the registry, so be careful. And make sure to have the 98se cd on hand incase you need it.

First. go into add/remove programs and uninstall dial-up networking . then run "regedit" from the start menu. Once in the registry, follow this path.... HKEY_Local_Machine---->System--> Current Control Set----> Services. Scroll down till you see Winsock2. delete it. then close out of regedit. and reboot your machine. When it reboots, go back into add/ remove programs, and reinstall Dial-up Networking. Reboot again, and you should be good to go then.
