I'm trying to learn networking just starting out Does anyone have some good resources to link to me that will teach me about it (noob friendly).

The problem that I have is that they talk about IP alot. One said to use ipconfig and i did and it gave me several ip adressess iPv4 Adress, Subnet, Default gateway. None of them match when I look up my IP on what http://www.whatismyip.com/ says my ip is. Just really need some help with networking in general. if anyone can help i have a skype (youlonsho).

ipconfig returns all the ip addresses for each network adapter installed on your system. The subnet mask basically identifies what network the network adapter will be a part of and the default gateway is usually a router that forwards traffic to another network.

The reason the ips don't match up is because you probably have a router on your network that you use to connect to the internet. If that is the case the router has a public ip address (internet) but it also can assign private ip address to computers on your network. When you use ipconfig it only shows you the ipaddress (private) that has been assigned to it. When you visited http://www.whatismyip.com/ it is only able to see your public ip address (router ip address).

Cisco probably has the best resources. Most of the stuff I learned about Networking was by playing with Linux servers, set up on my home network. As for the physical topology, it comes along with digging in and learning from the seat of you pants. I probably know more than a couple of in house IT techs for our agency about computers and networking.

Yes, what your talking about is NAT (Network Address Translation) Since there are a limited amount of IP addresses NAT is implemented..
So your local PCs have what you call an internal IP address and you router has an external IP or public IP address. Your internal IP address allows your PCs connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) to communicate. The external IP allows your PC with help from the router, talk to the Internet.

If your wanting to learn IP addressing or subnetting youtube has videos.
