I have a DSL modem (in bridge mode) connected to a Netgear WPN824 router. I have 2 (maybe 3) PC's connected to the router.

Is it possible to share files between the systems with this setup? Or do I have to use the internet as a "go between"?

Depends what OS you are using but if it's XP Pro then it's usually just a matter of clicking (START), (My Network Places), (Set Up a Home or Small Office Network). Then follow the wizard. You will need to do the same thing on each PC. You can also share a printer this way. Hope that helps... Jack.

OK, yeah, thats what I thought. I am just using XP Home to XP Home for now.

So does enabling File and Printer Sharing make me any more vulnerable on the net? How do I configure my softare firewall?

I don't think enabling file and printer sharing will make you more vulnerable on the net, but someone may say different lol.

Anyway, I don't know what firewall you are using but go to START, CONTROL PANEL, SECURITY CENTRE. Then click WINDOWS FIREWALL under 'Manage Security Settings.' Then click EXCEPTIONS and if you can see 'File and Printer Sharing' then tick/check the box.

Not sure if it''s exactly the same on XP Home.

More then liekly it won't make your more vurnable on the net, as any normaly isp blocks those or they if using a decent router they won't leave the router. So no worries as far as windows file sharing causing issues.

OK, I used the XP wizard on both machines (this seemed the easiest way) and I got it to work, but only with Windows Firewall. When I turn on my Kerio firewall on one machine, i can only share one direction. The machine trying to access the Kerio machine locks up.

I know I need to add something to my Trusted Zone in Kerio and allow File and Printer Sharing for the Trusted Zone, but I dont know what to add.

    Help??

Sorry, don't know much about Kerio firewall. But if you don't have the manual, here is the link for Kerio firewall PDF user manual.

    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/documents/sunbelt_kerio_personal_firewall_user_guide.pdf

I suggest you use the windows firewall while you have a read of the Kerio manual.
Take a look at the chapter 'Basic Firewall Configuration." and inside there, 'Working With Network Connections.'

I had a similar problem with AVG and could not figure out how to allow file sharing. So I am still using windows firewall lol.

I am thinking about just using Windows Firewall too. I get tired of the hassles of a 3rd party firewall.
