I plan on buying a new system to upgrade from my prehistoric amd 1600+. I still plan on keeping this computer in my room along with the new one(2 computers in my room yes....). There is a router in the basement that connect 4 computers to the net. All of those spots are being filled. 1 goes to my dad's comp, another to my mom's, another to my brothers, and 1 to mine. For me to connect a 5th one up to the net, im obvously gonna have to buy some piece of hardware.

    So here is the question:
Is there a way to take the cable that is connected to back of my computer and instead put it into some sorta unit that will split it right here in my room(the router is in the basement). So basically one ethernet cable would provide internet to both of my computers. I dont know if that is possible. Or am i gonna have to get something for the router to connect to down in the basement and have to run another ethernet cable up to my room (which would be an extreme pain in the ass). Thanks for help.

yes, it's called a hub ;) you can buy one relatively cheap and uplink it to the router via a standard cat5 cable.

I'd use a switch personally... but hey... hubs are much cheaper. It's up to you... but hubs are cheaper for a reason... they're slower.

I agree with T-Rex, get a switch, a lot faster
