Networking Sound

Hello all,

Wondering if anyone has any good resources regarding networking sound throughout a household. I'm interested in getting my computer to be able to play MP3s in several rooms of my house. I've seen some very cool options at Smarthomes.com such as http://www.smarthome.com/8270cE.html, but this is a bit expensive. Ideally I'd be able to pick different tunes in different rooms, but I also realize this may just be an expense that I'm not willing to incur. Does anyone have any cheaper options whether or not they allow you to play different songs in different rooms?

funny you ask but a few days ago i posted with an idea for a low cost computer system with a very small form factor motherboard.. which has a wireless network card in it and connects to your centeral PC with all the mp3s etc. on it. Then each unit gets a built in amp etc. to drive some speakers that you choose.

But you might want a simpler approach, such as some simple phono cables going to a preamp in each room... so you can select what youre listening to (like, CD, tuner, vcr, mp3...)and amplify in the room.

 

Goldfish. That sounds like an excellent idea. Now I'll have to start looking for cheap or free amps! I'm also interested in the other option you were talking about. Maybe it's not perfect for me, but perhaps I could tweak it a bit.

Anyone else have any good ideas?

Computers can be Network. Audio is Not part of the Computers Network per se.

If you put a Computer in each room and Network them together, you can connect the sound card to a nice set of Speakers, and stream music to each Network Computer.
