    Hello geeks! :)

I just switched from cable internet to ADSL internet (the cable was fine, but the ISP had implemented new security policies that would cut off certain parts of my internet access...chat, online gaming, p2p...if i continuously downloaded something for longer than 3 or so hours). The cable was 256K, whereas the ADSL is 40MB. I expect things to run a bit faster.

However, when I play online games (i.e. A Tale in the Desert or Vendetta) I am getting really slow speeds that affect gameplay. For example, when I load up ATITD the program downloads a bit of info before starting. This bit of info is usually between 50K to 200K (depending on how long it was since the last time I played...I think). Using the cable internet, it would take a couple of seconds to download this stuff. Using ADSL it's taking around 30 seconds for the smallest download to minutes for the 200K downloads. Gameplay is also slow. It's taking forever to render the landscape and whatnot.

Also, I've noticed that when I fire up my browser, it takes a couple of seconds lag before loading pages.

Any ideas what might be the problem? Do I have the modem configured improperly? Or do I have my software configured improperly? I am not running behind a router or a hub.

Thanks for your help. And let me know if you need more info.

Cable is faster than ADSL, or are you talking about Dial-up versus ADSL? On line gaming with ADSL required an upper level connection. Don't know how your ADSL is marketed in Japan but here there are usually several speed levels you can subscribe to depending on your needs. Up to 3Mbps/ 384Kbps (best effort) is the minimum required for online gaming by our provider here in the southeastern US. My daughter uses it and has no problems.

Hey golddust. Thanks for the reply.

The ADSL I signed up for advertises 40MB down and 1MB up. I realize most ISP actually don't give you those speeds, but I would think that evena fraction of that would be faster than what I was getting with cable.

Something still doesn't sound right. Cable is always faster than ADSL - at least here in the USA!
