A friend had my laptop for the past few months and it has some issues all of a sudden. Avast showed some viruses that he cleaned up. Apparently she started having trouble with it a week ago and in that time did several system restores rather than fix or let me know.

Now Firefox wont open....when I click on IE it will open but wont do anything when I click on a link

I have ran Hijack this and was hoping someone could help me with that and even tell me what other things I need to do. I am having to save things to a portable HD and then use my desktop.

    Thanks so much

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

What would you like to change your user name too?

You may have to post in the Software Forum as it sounds more like you are having Windows problems. Especially since you have multiple processes running that seem to be trying to reinstall Internet Explorer. The System Restores likely broke anything that had been installed after the time point of the System Restores. Thus you will have to reinstall the applications ( like Firefox for one example ).

It also looks like you have both Avast and some components of McAfee installed. You should uninstall both and then reboot. After the reboot, only reinstall one antivirus.

Then I suggest that you uninstall Spybot for now to get rid of any complications that could be occuring due to Teatimer running especially since you also have Windows Defender running.

Then run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0011-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_11) -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

If still having a problem with Firefox and Internet Explorer afterwards, please post in the Software Forum unless you really suspect that you have malware causing the problems. And if you suspect malware, you MUST follow the below instructions.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

    Thanks for the reply....

As for my username, I thought I put ynrozes64.

I had Avaston here and apparently my friend tried to put McAfee but said it wouldnt install properly because Of Nortons. I havent used Nortons on the laptop since I first bought several years ago and have not been able to find it to remove it or the Mcafee she tried to install. I will do the other things you suggested and see what happens. Thanks!

I'll try to change it in a few minutes after you acknowledge seeing this. You will have to relogin using the new name.

    You're welcome.

Okay then complete my other instructions, but this still may not be a malware issue.
