Not sure if price will come down in near future.
Since last xmas prices seem to have gone up alittle.
    At sonicparts.com 2200 is $50.46 including shipping/ the 2500 is $65.83 both oem/no sink or fan/warrenty maybe 30 days
Retail version both are about $13. more also get 3yr warrenty with retail
The 2500 barton I'd reccomend Too! for that little xtra money (aprox $15 more) get alot more CPU.

I agree with the thoughts on the 2500 Barton, i wouldnt reccomend one just yet however without seeing the rest of the system specs, his current mobo may not support a Barton

What make/model motherboard do you have waregle82, give us this information and we can offer some thoughts

As for your original question, technology moves so fast these days that invariably whatever hardware you buy will become old hat and drop in price, so if you worry too much about these things you would never buy anything ;)

    I have an msi k7t turbo2 (MS-6330).

msi site says fastest supported is the thouroughbred's
so the barton 2500 is out, provided no bios updates in future.

its about to be recomissioned to music box or router/server anyway.
    It has not:
    8x agp
    ata133(only ata100)
faster cpu core support, like barton

and I really dont want to replace the mobo at this point because i dont see the point really.

    my hope is to add:
    300gig maxtor hdd
    a new proc (2200 range)
fx5200(just to get the dvi for my lcd.)
and maybe size up one of my ram sticks(128 to 256 for 768 total)
    and an xitel hi-fi link

I am runing a duron 1.3ghz, and trying t get out of the duron line(first proc was a 750).
I just wanted something thats got the cache of the athlon xp.
and once you get the same size cach clock speed becomes less important anyway, thats why i said 2200.

the good news is im getting at least 30 for the duron!!!!!!!!!!
