So, I had avira (free) for years, and I liked it. Unobtrusive, and it seemed to catch the baddies. Then I got a notice that this version (the old one) would no longer be supported and that I should upgrade to the new version. So I upgraded. Since then my old, marginal creaky system has been slow as hell. Apparently the new improved version is scannng every file I open! Now this is imho gross overkill. If I had a fast system it would probably not matter. But with what I got it does - big time. I tried deleting some of the extensions it scans but truly I don't know how many extensions I should delete. I tried the "smart" or "program selects" option but I can see no difference - things are still slow. BTW all this take place in Realtime Protection. Is there anything else I should try? Or can you guys recommend another virus scan? I have commodo firewall, and was considering their virus scan but I know nothing about it- opinions? I had AVG once too, but dropped it - it seemed to get too big and slow.

I also have Comodo Firewall so here is my setup.

Comodo Firewall with Defense+ enabled, both in Safe mode and all settings are default.

    Microsoft Security Essentials
I made the following change to MSE settings only because I have Comodo Defense+ running as well, if I did not have Defense+ I would not make this change of settings.
There is no need to have both MSE Real-Time Protection and Comodo Defense+ checking every activity that happens and this change of settings makes things happen a bit quicker.

MSE > Settings > Real-Time Protection > Monitor file and program activity on your computer
    Select "Monitor only incoming files"
Leave everything else at default settings.

If you untick "Monitor file and program activity on your computer” you will be constantly annoyed with "Your computer might be at risk"
Comodo Defense+ has a great reputation plus you are still getting double monitoring on incoming files which is reassuring.

I tried something like that MadMal. It helped. But now Avira has a new trick; it can't update. I am going to take ASUS advice and try avast. BTW Comodo rocks, eh!
