New Build - Need Help Getting Things Back To Normal.

    I've just put together a new build with a Skylake 6500 & Z170 mobo hooked up with an EVO-850 SSD for OS (its not a Mitsubishi car, no). There were some problems but I'm pretty much up n running with Win7 now but like a joker I've overlooked some complications that are now slapping me in the chops, for example:-

    I had Firefox (slow as hell and uses 99% CPU 99% of the time but hey) and I've already got full bookmark backups but I forgot to backup my history and note what plugins I had (some plugs were essential!). Luckily I still have my old OS HDD where it should be installed so is there any way to retrieve the history & plugins from the old (now unlinked) installation? Hopefully the i5-6500 will take care of the 99% CPU rigmarole!

    I'm having to write all this on a tablet, I can't think of any other issues yet but they WILL come (this is a PC/computer after all!) so I'll add more as it comes to me, bear with me a minute!

    Basically I want the new build to resemble my previous build in terms of the software.

    Thanks in advance!

    Some more problems:-

    1.Power button behaves randomly: If you hold down to 'force off' sometimes the PC restarts instead. Also when turning on, there's a "powering up" noise then a short delay of about 5 seconds before anything actually happens. In my previous build, it powered on instantly, and that was a 10+ year old PC so something must be wrong! I've connected the header correctly to my knowledge. The actual boot time though is extremely quick (less than 1 minute!!! Used to take 3+ mins!)

    2.After hooking up my old system HDD (I kept Win7 installed on there so I could boot into it if the SSD fully degraded and died) an extra HDD labeled "System Reserved" appeared (100mb) in 'My Computer'. It was never visible there before, and the "System Reserved" partition of my current system SSD doesn't appear now (it only appears in DiskMan, as expected), so I don't understand why this old one is now appearing outside of DiskManager. How can I hide or disable it? I only want to see Drives in My Computer, not partitions, especially System Reserved ones!

    3. Aero doesn't work anymore (so no transparency or modern fx), even with a GTX650 Ti Boost & latest drivers. On the old Pentium D rig it worked fine, so definitely something iffy going on here... Before I installed the GTX (so the integrated GPU was active) I had the option to 'troubleshoot Aero problems' but now I can't see the option anywhere. Regardless, the result of the troubleshooter said my GPU doesn't support Aero (Skylake I-GPU's can't even handle Aero? Seriously!?).

    That's all I have right now but I'll keep updating as things go. Time to find where I put Snappy driver installer (hopefully I didn't delete it LOL).

    Cheers.

    Update on Aero problem: It seems to have fixed itself (all I did was select a different preset theme after leaving the PC for a bit, then it all came back!). Phew!

    Update on unwanted System Reserved partition: I found out you can remove the partition from the list using the "change drive letter" dialogue, but I don't want to remove the partition (obviously it'll be needed if I have to boot the OS on said HDD), I just want it hidden from 'My Computer' like it was before. If it actually does remove/delete the partition, I'll be in hot water!

    New problem: Some folders on my old OS HDD have locks on them and deny me access when I try to open them. Folders like Documents & Settings are affected. What can I do about this?

    Also, on the side panel of a window, under Libraries-->Documents: access to 'My Music, My Pictures & My videos are ALL denied, saying 'location not available' but I've only just installed Windows so how can those not be available!? Libraries such as 'Music, Pictures & videos' are available though, which makes me wonder what the unavailable ones actually are...

    Hi

    Can you list all your PC parts?
    Going on what you said was Windows a clean new install on the SSD or a clone or previous build image?
    A lot of your issues will likely come down to installing the original makers drivers and dont always think Microsoft core installed ones are ok, they are not in many cases, so get Intel Chipset for your mobo as a given, then check for others from the mobo maker, like network, audio, usb etc

    as for locked folders on older OS drives then you need to take ownership https://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/cc753659.aspx

    Thanks for the reply, I got myself in a bit of a twist here but yea I'll list those parts & anything else that's needed:-

    PSU = OCZ Fatal1ty 550W (from prev. build)
    Mobo = Asrock Fatal1ty Z170 K4/D3 (a budget DDR3 model of the K4)
    CPU = Core i5-6500 (locked, non-K model)
    RAM = Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3L - 8gb
    GFX = GTX 650 Ti Boost (2Gb model) (from prev. build)
    System drive = Samsung 850 Evo (120gb)
    OS: Win7 Ultimate 64bit

    I can't remember if I did this before or after making this thread but I grabbed Snappy Driver Installer and let it do its thing (used this for my previous Win7 install too), then I went to the Asrock page for my board which linked me to the Intel Chipset driver but I decided to leave the 'Killer LAN' driver because I never do LAN gaming (atleast not yet!).

    At this point, the power button now behaves normally again (phew!) although I haven't tried 'forcing off' again yet. Firefox also runs LOADS lighter (no more full on CPU thrashing!) and I managed to recover my old history 'Places.sqlite' file.

    I forgot to add: This was a clean install of Win7, no migration or heavy copying/moving. I wanted to keep this SSD strictly system, with the exception of a couple of games & programs which I can afford to lose. Everything else I'll keep on my HDD's. I relocated the 'downloads' folder off the SSD and intend to do the same with the 'My Documents' folder (Fallout 4 & other games love putting saves here. Each FO4 save is over 3mb... Insane!). Also, if it's safe/wise, I also want to relocate the 'temporary' folder away from the SSD, because programs like Ableton (and probably Photoshop) constantly write to the temp folders and with the small capacity of my SSD (120gb) things could start getting pretty tight...

    Thanks!
