I have a new Dell coming soon and I ordered without AV, did not want McAfee near it. Any recommendations on what to install, it will not be here until Tuesday so I have time to decide. I considered Trend Micro, AVG dive me fits after an upgrade on my XP. I trust any recommendations from you guys. Thanks for taking the time.

For me, AVG has done very well. But I always select the custom install and untick all but the antivirus top box. I know some here like the link scanner feature and if you have plenty of RAM, and a fast connection, that's ok too. :wave:wave:wave

It will come with Windows 7, I assume?

I currently run the free trial of TrendMicro that came with my Win7 laptop, and I'm very happy with it. Smooth, discrete, and seems to be doing a very good job. If you don't mind paying, that might be a good one. If you want free, either Avira or Avast will be a good choice, just remember that they're AV only. You still need a spyware blocker and a firewall.

It's AVG for me too, but this is like 'what's the best browser' so you are never going to get a consensus ;)

I use Avira, i have used AVG and Avast in the past, but find Avira much easier to use, it's relatively maintenance free and seems to be doing a good job!

You would need a firewall too as Mimsy said, i would suggest ZoneAlarm or Comodo, just try them and see what you like best.

    Hi

Read How to Protect yourself from malware! and from its advice

    I have installed
    Avast 5.x
    Spywareblaster
    Malwarebytes
Run the default Firewall in Win7 as I know how to control it but COMODO is a good option for software firewall.

in the end its the user thats the security monitor and issue, safe surf and download from known good sites as in Majorgeeks and you'll be ok, use p2p and unsafe surfing and well......

Thanks for all the great advice. I used AVG on my current computer and never had any issues until the last upgrade, my computer went into slow motion and thought I had malware or such. After being told from TimW that everything was clean it just got worse. I tried to do a repair to no avail, put my original hard drive back in. Everything went great, updated with all the windows update, still great, installed AVG got latest update, problems started all over again. Right now, Mediacom offers CA internet security for free, and may stay with. What's the poop on CA internet security?

I used it briefly, and did not like it but that was several years ago. It may have changed since. As with most software, if you like and it gets the job done, keep it. If not, replace it. :)

I'm reading this thread with great interest as I'm now looking for new AV for my computers after Bit Defender sent out an update this morning that not only ate itself but thousands of Windows files too!

Or google BitDefender fakealert.5 and check it out. This is one product that you don't want.

Malwarebytes goes on every computer I own. As for the antivirus, you can't go wrong with either Avira or Avast. (I've moved away from AVG because for me it became slow and bloated).
If I were going to purchase an antivirus/antimalware, I'd buy ESET.
Again, it is a personal choice because what works well for my hardware, might not like your hardware.

Thanks for all the suggestion, also, I'm not the only with this question. I still have time to think about this one and appreciate all the great advice.

My experience is stay away from AVG. Especially with their more recent versions as they seem to be resource hogs.

    Free Antivirus:
    Avira (Install Ad-Aware too)
    Avast (Install Ad-Aware too)

    Paid Antivirus
    VIPRE (www.sunbeltsoftware.com)

Always install Malwarebytes on all computers and keep up to date.

I've been trying out VIPRE over the past year and have found it to be an extremely good piece of software. Tech Support has been very helpful and the application has good reviews all across the board. I haven't found a single bad review against the product.

Depends on what resources you have available... on a quad-core CPU with 4GB or more of RAM, it's not an issue at all. :-D

Stay away from TrendMicro Internet security it tells me to uninstall Spybot search and destroy. Then it refuses to install if I do not take Spybot out. I can only imagine what it says about malware bites and any other spyware scanner.
Needless to say I did not renew my subscription....:(

na, i'm running a 1.6ghz single core with 3G ramm and my (paid) AVG 9 something is great, no issues. commodo is good stuff, but its total package now, comes with its own AV, and its a little too attention hungry for me though part of that was i never configured it properly to begin with.

Nothing. I was able to install Malwarebytes very easily, and they're running side by side on my computer. :)
