    General thoughts:

Get a CDR if you can swing it...

256 meg, no way, get 512 no matter what. You'll thank me later.

SiS746FX. Personally, dislike SiS, try for VIA or nForce. You might be able to get an Nforce with a GeForce 4 onboard as well as the onboard sound and network. So, couple more bucks for a better board and chop money by not needing a video card in the list.

if you're on a budget, i'd build a system on this board http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-468&depa=1

its a solid board with an nforce chipset, and its not much more than the ones you were looking at, and its ASUS.

other than that, give us an idea of your budget and what you want to do with the system and we can further help.

    btw, nice avatar ;)

I just made sure I could get a monitor for free from a friend, he told me he sold it just the other day, looks like I'll have to go pick up a cheap monitor from a local store...

heres the system that I built for a friend's family

    A7N8X E-Deluxe $99 nt-micro.com
    Segate 80GB SATA Hard Drive $67 nt-micro.com
Athlon XP 2600+ retail $94 newegg
OCZ Basic Series 512MB DDR PC-3200 - Retail $99 newegg
    Sony black floppy $11 newegg
    Lite-On LTR-52327S CDRW $44 newegg
ASPIRE case Black ATXB5KLW/350 $49 newegg
    LITE-ON SK-1788 keyboard $11 newegg
    Aopen GeForce FX5700 128MB $106 newegg
    3 case fans $9 newegg

obviously you can choose your own case, but theres my example.
the processor was running 45C idle and 50 under full load, which is not bad at all for a stock heatsink.

i threw farcry on that to test out before i gave it to them, and it ran beautifully at 1280x1024 with 40-60FPS, and only dropped to 30FPS with 4xAA

ooh, that sucks, monitors are expensive. you can get a simple 17 inch black CRT mionitor (either philips or CTX) through newegg for $120 shipped. but that means you'll have to cut corners to stay in your budget... have a birthday comping up? haha

Speaking of case fans, The case I'm getting only has room for 2 mounted fans.. 1 in back & one in the middle of the window.. do think it would be possible for me to mod the case and drill a couple holes though the window for a third fan?

as for the onitor I think buying a refurbished one from a local store is my best bet.

you probably only need 1 on the side window. you'll want at least 2 exhaust, so if you set it up as the rear and side fan as exhaust, and have 1 intake fan on the front, you should be ok, though its nice to have 2 rear exhaust fans.

if you want to mod and drill holes, i like the new placement right near the PSU on the top of the case to exhaust all the hot air. (the case i listed has this for an example)

Wonder how long till Naruto goes mainstream?

what would make it mainstream? i think the 12, 000 seeds on a new bit torrent episode say enough. 94 came out today... sooooo good

What I mean by mainstream is Cartoon Network playing and editing it to death. I wonder if they left anything out in case closed... mmm... case closed.

Very nice. Hope you enjoy the new system. Also, on a side note, did anyone know that Case Closed runs LONGER than Dragon Ball Z! Its at like 300 episodes so far. Longest anime series known...MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... Case Closed.

    I agree about the RAM.

Do you think PC2100 512mb would still run faster than PC3200 256mb?

    Let me say...HELL YEAH!

Aight, I'm getting 512 PC2100 then, later I'll be upgrading to 1 gig of PC3200 though..

if you are still going for a 266FSB processor like the XP 2400+, you can only benefit from pc2100 anyway. the only real benefit of faster RAM in that case would be upgradeability... i.e. upgrading CPU later on or throwing that RAM into a new system. if you plan to stay with the 2400+, pc2100 is fine.

you may consider pc2700 or 3200 however, if you ever plan on upgrading to a 333 or 400FSB barton cored athlon XP.

in any case, you NEED 512MB for windows XP to run well.

btw, I'll be running Linux on this anyway, For the first few months until I can get my hands on a copy of 2k or XP..
