New computer, internet connection question

Hey i just got a new computer and i just want to know how i will install my old ethenet connection to it,.................. i use virgin media modem, i just wanna know if i just put the virgin media CD in and then connect the ethernet cable when it instructs me to do so (which is infact an old ntl cd which i always use when ive reinstalled my old computer)............... or if i just put the ethenet cable in will it automatically connect to the internet thanks for your help
