Hi, i'm trying to put together a new computer but I am having issues that i'm having trouble resolving. I will list my specs after the problem. I have hooked up the computer (and to my knowledge correctly) however everytime I get past the bios screen it tells me that windows did not start up properly and asks if I would like to start in safe mode or normal etc. The problem is that when I click safe mode of normal or even last working configuration it just seems to restart like I hit the restart button. The screen goes dead and the monitor says it's not receiving any input and it goes back to the beginning again. I have gone into bios and it reads my ram and processor and seems to be fine. I also checked the boot order and made sure it's reading the hard drive and also that the hard drive is the master to my cd-rom. The processor temp is at 52C and the whole pc reads as about 35C. I am using an Intel Motherboard D955XBK, 1 gig PNY DDR2 533 PC 4200 ram in the form of one stick, a western digital hard drive 40 gigs (this is an old piece of equipment and still has windows on it), pentium 4 640+ 3.2 Ghz 800 MHz FSB hyper threading support processor, 500W Rosewill Power supply, and a radeon X1300 512 MB graphics card. When I turn it on all the fans run so nothing seems to be not working. I have also tried reseating my ram and graphics card as well as unplugging everything inside and replugging it to make sure everything was connected properly. Also I have tried my old 350W psu but that didn't seem to help any. I can't try an old graphics card because I don't have a PCI one and the new slot is PCI-E. I have not gotten any beeps when starting it up and have had no error messages, everything seems to sound pretty much normal. I have also tried to start a fresh copy of windows XP however when I get to the screen where it asks me if I want to start installing (by pressing enter) it just freezes up, the bios don't seem to cause any trouble though. I appreciate any suggestions and comments ^_^

First thing I noticed was that you said your cd - rom is slave to your hard drive ....shouldn't be on the same ide .....
If you have xp installed on the hard drive and it's out of another computer, may not recognize the new system ....and will require a reinstall.

Ok I solved my problem when I got into the windows installation screen I had a keyboard with a usb hookup plugged in and it didn't work with that for some reason, plugged in an old keyboard and installed a fresh copy of windows and it works now. You've got my curiousity peaked though Tim, why do you say I shouldn't have my hard drive on the same IDE as my cd-rom? I had this setup the same way on my old comp and the new motherboard instructions actually show a diagram of it being hooked up this way. The motherboard also only has one IDE plug so I couldn't hook both up to a cable otherwise. If i'm missing something important help me out, thanks =)

If only one ide channel ...then my mistake ....assumes (wrongly) we were talking a tower not a laptop ...my bad. Have had similar problems with comp's not recognizing usb keyboards ....:) :)

    I don't think it's a laptop.

I think it's a desktop, but it only has 1 parallel ATA, and the rest are probably serial ATA.

You should seriously consider getting a decent serial hard drive, as that 40G would be bottlenecking the system.
