Having problems trying to connect a 2nd computer.

Bought a new computer and thought it would be easy to hook up small home network where both computers could talk to each other and have internet access.

I have an older 3com hub and figured i could just plug cablemodem and both computers into the hub and they would all talk to each other. It doesn't work.

Here is what works and what doesn't:

    computer A
    - has internet when connected to hub
    - has internet when connected direct to cablemodem

    computer B
    - no internet when connected to hub
    - has "Oops! Activation Incomplete" when connected direct to cablemodem

    computers A & B
    - can see each other and exchange files when connected to hub unless...
    - if cablemodem is also connected to hub then computers can no longer see each other.

    equipment:
arris cablemodem TM602G, looks used, leased from Comcast cable
    3com hub 1672, 100BASE-TX, 8 port, about 10 yrs old
computer A, Gateway, windows 7, 64 bit, 3 months old
computer B, HP, windows 7, 64 bit, brand new

I tried asking Comcast tech support for help.
They rebooted the cablemodem which did not help.
Then they offered to send out an installer.

You can not use a hub. Get a Router and connect that to the modem for your service provider, then connect the computers to the router. The reason that that hub/switch will not work, is because your EMT only hands out one IP. Matter of fact, call Comcast, you can get a free Wireless N Wifi Router for $10 shipping.

    Thanks Brownizs,

No wonder I couldn't make any progress. That tip saves me some headaches.

Not sure I want any additional equipment from Comcast. they are already charging me $7/month for the cablemodem. Would like to replace that and end leasing charges. My house is already wired and none of my equipment has wireless receivers so I think i would prefer a wired router.

Looking at picking up a used Linksys BEFSR81, they are pretty cheap on ebay. Would that get me online for now?

The router from Comcast does not cost a monthly fee. It is a one time shipping of $10, or pick up at the local office for free. Only time you would get charged, is if you do not return it at the end of your term with them, if you decide to go with another service provider. Consider it as their gift to you, without having to go out and purchase a second piece of equipment.

They realized their shortcomings in the fact that people tend to have more than one device, and having to go out and purchase equipment to get all of it online.
