I am getting a new computer and I was just looking for some suggestions. I use my computer for internet classes, digital pictures and for the internet. What memory do you suggest? Hard drive number? What kind of cd? rw or the dual combos? and what type? Dell or gateway>

Is money an issue? If it is, what kind of range are we talking about. Also, how big are the digital pictures? Are we talking standard .jpg, or huge .tif files? Do the internet classes involve intensive graphics processing?

If those are the three things your mainlly doing, I suggest 512 megs no matter what, a large hard drive; say 160 gig, cdr and cdrw are pretty cheap now, so get as much as you can afford here as it will be a dinosaur in a tear otherwise.

Dell or Gateway? Given that choice... Dell. Both tend to skimp in areas you can not afford to in their cheaper machine. For example,a low voltage power supply, way too little ram, an inferior chip, crappy video card. Try some other reliable manufacturers with good reps, I purchased from http://www.abspc.com a couple times and they were great, using one now actually. Otherwise, check our Geek Shopping link from the front page, see of you can find a deal.

Is platform an issue? Because if it isn't, I would suggest an Emac, which is Apples budget computer, and it would do everything you need if platform isn't an issue and do it very user friendly.

Two things you need to know before building a PC:
    1. How much money you want to spend.
    2. What you want the PC to do.

After that, it's actually pretty easy.

If you aren't looking to build (which I would suggest if you have a friend who knows how to do it, or if you know a little yourself) then I would go for a Dell.
