It's been a while since ive posted anything here, mainly becuase I have had my second registry error of this year :(. Also i've run out of XP CD keys, though they gave me this one :) for free so i'm happy for now.

So anyway I just upgraded my PC with birthday money (I bought the thing on chistmas money and savings lol), new motherboard and CPU:

    Motherboard:

    Old...
    MSI K9VGM-V
    AM2,PCI-E,2 SATA2 ports

    New...
    ASUS M3A
    AM2,AM2+ HT3, PCI-E 2.0, 4 SATA2 ports

    CPU:

    Old...
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
Frequency 2300MHz, L2 Cache Size 512KB, System Bus 2000 MHz

    New...
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Frequency 3000 MHz, L2 Cache Size 1024KB, Syatem Bus 2000MHz

So you'll probably agree thats quite a step up :cool, but it's not really that good at certain tasks. It took me around an hour and 15mins to install Need For Speed: Pro Stree thats 8.1GB and 2 more game took a similar time :(, actual gaming and most tasks it is faster by far, also I was watching a DVD and it wasn't as such slow just not perfect. I can also hear the DVD drive through my speakers/headphones, the sound of the DVD slowing down before it ejects I can hear that :confused Anyone got any Idea's?

If you need any more info on my PC I can provide it all, I just though It would be too much for a simple CPU and sound issue :-D

    Thanx for reading

    Nobody got any clues?

I thought maybe a BIOS setting? To choose between AM2 and AM2+?
I'm not too familiar with the ASUS BIOS yet :confused

It's rather frustrating Spder-man 3 PC is only 6.1GB and it takes as long as Pro street which is 8 and a bit, why?

    Any help/ideas welcome.

It sounds like your DVD drive is maybe starting to die. Or maybe not..... installing software is not something that you'd see a speed increase with when you upgrade a PC. It can only install as fast as the drive can read it from the disc. The processor and RAM and processing it as fast as possible, probably faster than what the DVD drive can provide. So you got the same performance installing software with both processors. Not a big deal and that is totally normal. Playing a DVD movie, again, isn't something that you'd notice a performance increase. The movie either plays, or it doesn't. You wouldn't want the movie to play faster because you have a faster CPU, would you? So the movie playback is fine. There is no BIOS setting for AM2/AM2+, the MB will auto-detect it and do what it should. Run any system info tool, if it reports the CPU correctly, then don't worry about it. So, I see nothing in your post that tells me you're having any kind of problems, it all seems normal to me. The only thing I can think would be to replace the DVD and see if you notice any differences (I don't think you will). You didn't mention how much RAM you have... I'm assuming it's DDR2, but I have no idea how much; this can make a HUGE difference in performance, but from what I can see, you don't really have any performance issues....

I think you maybe right about my DVD drive, but it only happened when I changed my hardware. I was able to install things alot faster with my old mobo and CPU, it might have nothing to do with the hardware change but it seems a rather large coinsadence that it happened when it did, don't you agree?

I think the DVD was playing a little slower because I was really labouring the CPU at the time come to think of it :-D

I have 2X 1GB DDR2 667 insalled since wanting to play Assasins Creed on my old setup :)

I think there must be an issue when the 3 games I have insalled since formatting (Need For Speed: Pro Street, Spider-man 3 and Colin McRae Dirt) all took over an hour to install. Is there any way to test the drive to make sure? I need a new case before anything else, this one simply won't do anymore, my CPU is getting quite hot even with the side pannel off lol

    Thanx for the Idea's :)
