Ok i have an HP Pavilion 504n; The specs on the HP site says it supports socket 478, Celeron and P4's 400mhz bus and up to 2.5 GHZ, I have a celeron 2.0 GHZ; the new one is a IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® 4 2.50 GHz SL6EB. I put it in and turned on the PC and it detected the CPU but nothing will load and i can't even get into bios setup, the pc just keeps shutting off. Any ideas whats going on?? Thanks!

    Overheating?

Would it overheat that quickly because it's a bigger CPU to the point that the PC wouldn't even boot?? I put a little thermal grease on the CPU, not a whole lot, maybe i didn't apply enough? Besides that is there any other reason why this shouldn't be working?

i doubt it would overheat that quickly

Is the HSF assembly clipped on correctly? Check it.

    Set the BIOS to defaults.

I don't know what was wrong but i took it out and added some more thermal grease and put it back in and everything booted right up. doesn't seem to be much difference between the new and old CPU though, Like i was told there wouldn't be; Just had to see for my self. lol.

Good to see you got it sorted. Normally with the addition of a new CPU you want to "reset" the BIOS (removing CMOS Battery) and then boot the system.

i haven't done that, should i still do it? by doing that what does it do?

"If it ain't broke don't fix it". It seems your system is running and fine and should not need a CMOS/BIOS reset.

On the other hand if you were OC mad it would be crucial because of all the "micro setting" adjustments made in the BIOS would most likely not be suitable for a different CPU.

I agree, it's working, that's all that matters. lol.
