New CPU (XP-M 2500+) multiplier stuck at something way below default, help please.

Been sat on a Tbird 1100 for so long and think an upgrade will be nice, nice, nice. So I got a XP 2500+ mobile processor stuck it in my pc and it doesnt seem to be able to do anything over a 5.5 multiplier, not even it's default which is 14.

It doesn't crash or lock, it's just that I'll select it and it won't take it just reverts back to 5.5, that applies with trying to set any multiplier.

I downloaded CPUID and set a higher multiplier there and it said the new core speed has increased, so that seems to work, I dont notice any speed increase with general usage but it said it clocks higher.

Is there anyway to set a higher Multiplier in the BIOS? I know very little about overclocking and jumpers and the like so will someone please offer a helping hand so this small upgrade doesn't go in vain.

My specs are
AMD Athlon XP-M 2500+
Asus A7v333 motherbord
512MB ram (256 pc2700, 256mb pc3500)
nVidia 6600GT 128MB
Q-Tec Gold 550W Psu

If you can offer any help or ideas at all, I could search some of it up myself or if you have an answer, the I would be indebted to you I really need this to work for me as I don't have the pennies to buy another upgrade unfortunately.

 

Does Cool n' Quiet program use the multiplier to control power consumption?

It's been a while since I used the program.

The other option I thought of is if your Heat Sink isn't mounted correctly the CPU may be underclocking itself to cut heat and stop itself frying. Do you know your temperatures?
