Hey, I just bought this http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Mad-...54313/catOid/-12975/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do DVD Burner drive for my computer. I've installed it in my computer and it will not read discs. I have it set to Master with this little pin thing on the back. I've tried every combination with and without my pre-existing CD Rom drive. Can anybody help me on getting this working? (the tray opens and closes it just doeosn't read the discs.)

    Let's ask some questions first:
You also have a cd -rom installed ....is it set to slave and is the master on the last connection on the ide?
Under device manager, properties ( of the dvd) is the box checked to allow this device to play audio from cd?

    Hi ya urmom.
Do yo have it (DVD) on it's own cable?
That would the the cable that the main hard drive isn't hooked to.
The DVD-RW usually likes being on an IDE channel of it's own.

    With that in mind...
    What drives do you have?

Right now, the DVD RW drive is set to master. I disconnected the CD ROM drive that was in my computer and put the DVD RW drive in its place as a last attempt to get it working. I'm not exactly sure which part of the ide it's connected to either. I'd have to open up the case again tomorrow and check. The ide is the cable inside the computer right? If it is then it is using the one directly connected to the motherboard, not the hard drive. And that option is checked.

OK ...if it's the only device on that ide cable and is set to master ...and there are no ! or X or ? associated with it in device manager ...then unistall it in device manager and reboot ...post back.

are you saying that it won't read any kind of discs? (cd's, dvd's, blanks, etc.)

Tim, I did that and when my computer booted back up it said that it found new hardware. I put a CD in it and it still doesn't work. It seems to not want to read discs or something because I opened the CD Drive in My Computer and nothing was there even though I had a CD there.

Last ditch experiment is to find one that you can borrow (I have like four laying around the house) and swap it out. Then we'll know where the problem lies.:)

Is the disc that you are trying to read from a commercially made music cd or movie, or is it one that you have burned in the past??

If it is a home burned disc, then try another like a "real" cd as opposed to a home burned cd. This is to eliminate the possility of it being a bum disc and/or the dvd drive just simply might not like the disc itself!!

Well the discs that I'm trying to burn with is the SONY DVD +RW and my burner accepts those but when I go into Roxio 8 and try to burn a CD, it sais put a blank disc in even though the SONY disc is in the drive. I've tried playing one of my games too and they don't work. I've also tried putting in movies and they also aren't read. TimW, do you mean put in another disc drive and see if it works? I took out the original disc drive that came with my computer so should I swap that and see if it works?

Well I only have the one that I took out to use. I'm using the same exact cable part and the same exact settings as the one that I took out so I don't see a need to do that. Could the problem lie in the DVD drive itself?

Yes...which is why I suggested putting a different one in to test.

The one you took out, did it work at all? If it did put it back in and see if it will do what it used to do. Then if it works you will know the new one is bad and you need to take a trip to circuit city. ed

Yea, my old one is in perfect condition. The only reason that I got rid of it was because it couldn't burn DVD's.
