I was reading threads about receiving warning message of "low case fan rpm", replacing fans and CPU grease, and got my ducks in a row from that. My CPU temp is usually in the mid-40s, which is reported to be okay for P-4.

Now I've ended up with an extra 90mm fan and see a power connection dangling in front when I open the case. Also, I have noticed how hot the optical drives get when in use. So my question is about where and how I could use the fan? After looking at the cost of mid-tower cases, I'm reluctant to start cutting. I do see ventilation holes in the rear half of the left side of my case that I might manage to use as screw holes.

Maybe I should specifically ask if I could/should keep the fan virticle, use two of the vent holes for screws, then use duct tape to direct the fan to toward the rear exhaust fans or toward the optical drives?

Sorry if this is too wordy, wave. bookburn

    what brand/make/model is your case?

and do you have room between your HDD and the front of the Comp case?

It's a Sony Vaio VGC-RB with a D915GEV motherboard. There's room below the optical drives for this Foxconn 90mm fan. I can see how cutting into the front of the case at the bottom would help mount the fan to face back to the rear. Might help draw air away from the optical drives. bookburn

im sorry i should have asked this first, how many fans do you have, what size (brand would help), and where are they place already?

since you are concerned about cooling i would make sure you have negative pressure (means you have more air going out of your computer then going in). More than direction of the fan.

I have the 80mm power supply fan, the 90mm case fan, and a smaller I guess 60mm CPU fan. Left side case cover has holes for air input. Case fan I have left over is 90mm and plugs into power supply, not mother board as required by bios. Made the mistake of using WD-40 on CPU fan and have to re-do with 3-In-One. I'm okay as otherwise, just want to put fan to work, yet hate to cut into case front. bookburn

hmmm... its hard to say without seeing the situation with my own eyes. but i personally would place the fan on the bottom left or where ever you were saying, blowing out. i wouldn't be to concerned about angling the fan towards the optical drives. But about drilling new holes i under stand, on one of my old comps a couple of the fans are held on by zip ties :D

here are some sites that may help...
