New to the forum. I hope I put this in the right place. I tried to install a Maxtor onetouch 4 external drive with my sony Vaio computer. I'm using windows xp.

After a numbr of tries, I'm unable to use the drive. When I click on the drive, I get the following error message

"The procedure entry point setdlldirectoryW could not be located in the dynamic link library kernal32.dll."

As of right now, I'm lost as to what to do next. Any help is appreciated

    Thanks

    Jim

Have you tried to format the drive at all?

Are you able to access it from within Windows?

If so, open My Computer > Right click the drive > Format.

If you can do a quick format then tick that box then click format.

Please be warned - formatting the drive will lose all data on the drive!

You need to explain how you click on the drive. Is this done on the Vaio or on the external drive using a button? Does the device show up in Device manager? Is there a yellow ! or a red x? What drive letter is assigned to the drive.
Is the Vaio running XP SP2? What is the size of the external hd?

    Did you update the software?

Re: New Guy - problem with Maxtor External Drive

Ok here goes. When I access try to access via programs, I click on 'maxtor one drive". As soon as I click on the program, I get the error message. Also, there is a green M for "Maxtor" in the lower right hand corner of the screen. When I click on "maxtor manager", I get the error message.

By the way, the light is always on the external device. I did not download the update because I didn't think the original version is properly installed.

Not sure where to find device manager to determine red or yellow x. I'm using windows xp. The size of the hard drive is 250 gb.

Staples said this is the way to go for back up but I haven't found it to be the case.

    Thanks for the help.

    1. The light is always on, on my external drive - that's nothing to worry about.
    2. I can't find anything for Maxtor one drive so I'm not exactly sure what you are clicking. Do you perhaps mean One Touch?
    3. To use the Dantz Retrospect Backup, you should be pushing a button on the external hard drive. What happens when you do this?
Also just to be sure, you did use the CD to install the Dantz backup software? (I did not do this with my external drive because I prefer to use Acronis True Image instead).
