New hard drive issues

    Hi
    I have a gateway 2001 1 gh intel, My wife bought a new western digital
    320gb harddrive.
    Here is my problem, The install disk that came with the harddrive says the bios is off.
    as best as I can tell from reading the paperwork that came with the new hard drive the problem is my bios needs updated to accept the hard drive over 137gb in other words XPsp1 or better. My os install disk is XP only.
    How can I update my bios without having windows running?

    What SP do you have installed on your computer?

    Your bios is from your motherboard manufacturer.

    because the harddrive is new i have only my origanal install disk XP2 with no severice packs

    You could burn an image of your hard drive now onto disc so you could load it up from there.

    But I am not sure that SP3 would update your bios.

    How old is your motherboard?

    If the old hd is working, temporarily use that and update the BIOS, then install the new 320GB hd and use your XP install disk.
    If that is not an option, then attach the 320 GB drive to your buddy's computer and partition it into 137 GB partition and the remainder in a second partition.
    The install disk should now see the 137GB partition and install to that. It will not see the other partition until you add service packs or update the BIOS.
