New hard drive not found

Hi, I'm trying to restore an old laptop. Laptop (Dell Inspiron 4000) would start clicking when botting up, and boot up would fail. It would do this sometimes, and not others, but progressively became more common. Was told this was probably the hard drive connection by Dell, told to take out the hard drive and slide it back in, and yes, it worked. Until the warranty ran out and then died for good two weeks later.
Bought a new hard drive, and put it in, but upon booting up would say Primary Hard disk 0 not found. In BIOS hard drive is listed as none. Not sure how to get the new drive recognized, or if this is a bad mother board. Read suggestions somewhere to turn caps, num, scroll lock lights on and reset bios, but none of those lights will turn on.

Any suggestions, or is it dead?

well, I can't do anything with this computer as it is now, so I'm open to whatever can be done. I don't exactly have a lot of experience with this stuff, but willing to try anything I suppose
