Have a Dell Dimension 8200. Dell Rep had me run a diagnostic, and told me that the hard drive was going out. Got a new hard drive an installed it. I did not transfer any data from the old hard drive. When I reinstalled Windows xp, it took forever. Now it is installed and it takes a long time for the desktop to come up. what else should I check or replace?

what version of XP and service pack? you may need updates and a service pack. The previous mention help XP to recognize and accomodate different things on the system including software preformance. I'm assuming the pc is new?

No it is an older PC. I reinstlled XP from the disk that came with it originally. It is the home edition. I am starting from scratch with it.

Something you might take a look at is the possibility that you might have some defective ram memory. It's hard to say. With a new install the pc ought to be running top notch. that only leaves hardware as the culprit. All your software is fresh except for updates like i mentioned earlier. Also might need other drivers to help that new drive communicate properly with XP home.
