I need a new (60GB) hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 600m. Dell products are backordered and I do not think I need toi purchase one from them as they get theres from others, right? If I am right, can you tell me where is the best place to look and how I would know if would be compatible? Thanks, David:confused:

No you don't need to necessarily order from Dell.

If it's a laptop, it needs a hard drive that's 3.5" and preferably 5400 rpm.

Can't tell you the best place to look as I don't know which country you're in?

(if it's the US area (accept my sympathies :p ), try newegg)

I am in the US, sad to say but isn't it a 2.5" and not a 3.5"? Just checking. Thanks for the advice. David

Sorry, I'm very tired and had (have) no sleep.

Anyway, yes, you are correct, 2.5", but to clarify,

The fastest hard drive I have seen for laptops is 7200 rpm. (there is also 5400 and 4200)

The faster the spindle speed, the faster the performance, but the more heat and power usage, two vital things in a laptop. (as well as noise)

It really depends on what you need. Also, some laptops are very easy to replace the drive, and others are a pain in the arse.

I've never done one for your model, so can't say with certainty.
